Unlike ordinary hardships, traumatic events tend to be sudden and unpredictable, involve serious threat to life, like bodily injury or death, and feel beyond person’s control. Sufferers of long-term trauma may develop emotional disturbances, such as extreme anxiety, anger, sadness, survivor’s guilt, dissociation, the inability to feel pleasure (anhedonia), or PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). While many parents experience some mild mood changes during or after the birth of child, 15 to 20% of women experience more significant symptoms of depression or anxiety.
